Simplex Grinnell donated iPods as prizes for students participating in fire safety-based contests. SAFE ON CAMPUS ... In conjunction with Campus Fire Safety Month CCFS, Kidde and The Home Depot sponsored a special "Safe on Campus" program to give parents and students important fire safety information both online and in the store. The Culinary Institute
With the help of the Roosevelt Fire Department, NYS Office of Fire Prevention, Residential Life Staff,
Security Staff and Facilities; The Culinary Institute conducted a live burn demonstration for the
students. Constructing two very similar mock dorm rooms they set them on fire to witness the speed,
intensity and amount of toxic smoke generated from a dorm room fire. They wanted to impress on
the students that they must evacuate immediately upon hearing the fire alarm.

This year by using two 'burn pods' (one with an automatic fire sprinkler and one without) they
demonstrated the effect sprinklers have on extinguishing or slowing fire grow to allow time for occupants to escape. There was a huge turn out (400 plus) - with many staying for Q & A and several inquiring about volunteering with the fire department. (The last two impressively show the aftermath and comparison of the room with sprinkler protection vs. the one without).
