CULLOWHEE, NC (FOX Carolina) - University officials said firefighters are responding to a large fire on the campus of Western Carolina University. The school posted an alert online Thursday morning, saying the fire was at the Subway located at the mini-mall at Centennial and Central Drive on campus.

Newburyport, Massachusetts … November 18, 2013. The house at 111 Lutz Street sits vacant after a fire ravaged it early Saturday morning. In its wake, the fire left one man dead and two injured. The departed was identified by the Tippecanoe County Medical Examiner as 22 year old Scott Notary, of Lafayette, IN, a senior at Purdue University. Notary was found on the second floor of his house by fire crews. The fire was first reported at 2:46 a.m. The house, where this tragedy occurred, is mere blocks away from Purdue’s campus. The fire also caused an evacuation of nearby residences.

Classes resumed today after an explosion disrupted the campus of the University California, Berkeley. The explosion, which originated in an underground utility vault located outside California Hall, occurred at around 4:40 p.m., while electricians were working to return electrical service. The explosion resulted in at least four injuries; at least one of the injured parties was a student. As a result of the explosion, nearly twenty people were stuck in elevators and eleven buildings were without power. All trapped parties were removed from the elevators by 8:30 p.m.

Newburyport, Massachusetts – September 20, 2013.
Shortly after 1:00 a.m. today, a fire broke out in an apartment building on Couch Street in Plattsburg. Working quickly, fire crews extinguished the fire in under an hour. One resident was transported to the hospital, with unspecified injuries. Her condition is, to quote a fire department public information officer, “not good.” Unconfirmed reports state that some of the residents of this building are students of Plattsburg, a State University of New York (SUNY) school. More information will be released, once available. Information pertaining to fire detection and suppression systems within the building were unavailable at the time of press.

Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded a new federal FIRE Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to Montclair State University (MSU) in the amount of $23,400. The federal grant will help expand MSU's Community Assistant Fire Academy, a program facilitated by the MSU Department of Fire Safety in partnership with the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute (BCLPSI) that teaches resident students the importance of fire safety through a hands-on simulation from a fire fighter's perspective.

Tragedy struck the Saddleback College campus, located in Mission Viejo, CA, when an early morning fire occurred at 6:39 on Monday, July 8, 2013. One student was left dead in the wake of a fire that occurred in the campus’s Business and General Studies Building, according to a Saddleback College press release. The Orange County Fire Authority has deemed this fire to be arson, as traces of accelerants were found on the scene. The identity of the victim, a 21 year old male who was found with second and third degree burns and was unconscious at the scene, has yet to be released, as the investigation is currently ongoing.

Newburyport, Massachusetts – June 4, 2013. Breaking news from Nyack College: An explosion ripped through a building on the campus of Nyack College, in Nyack, New York, leaving a chaotic scene of shattered glass and debris. The explosion, which occurred just before noon today, injured seven campus community members, including a student and six employees of the college. A natural gas leak is currently suspected as contributing to the explosion; however, at this time, officials have not determined an “official” cause for the explosion. Although seven were injured, one of whom was blown through a second story window, none were injured critically and all persons have been accounted for. Neighboring dormitories were evacuated as a measure of precaution.

In the early morning of Sunday April 28, 2013, a fire broke out in a quiet Allston neighborhood. This fire would claim the life of one Boston University student and would injure two other students and six firefighters. The deceased student was later identified as Binland Lee, a senior studying marine science; she was 22 years old. Lee’s room was located in the attic of the three story house. Due to the size of the fire, suppression crews were unable to reach her.

On Monday, February 11, an afternoon fire at the University Court Apartments, a privately owned apartment complex that markets itself as being “…designed specifically for the students at UC Davis…” has left as many as twenty University of California, Davis, students without a home and injured two. Luckily, unlike last week’s fire at Kansas State University, there were no fatalities involved in this incident.

On Tuesday, February 12, 2013, fire in an off campus housing apartment near Indiana University of Pennsylvania displaces seven students. Fortunately there were no fatalities nor were there injuries. At the time of the fire, at approximately 10:00 p.m., none of the students were home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the State Police spokesperson declined to comment on the status of their investigation.

On January 1, 2013, a fire tore through an off campus home housing University of Cincinnati students at 2824 Digby Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the wake of this fire, one student, 21 year old Chad Kohls, perished after a week long struggle to overcome the injuries he sustained from the fire. It is with deep sorrow that the Center for Campus Fire Safety announces the passing of a second victim: On Monday January 14th, 20 year old Ellen Garner lost her life as a result of this tragic incident.
