Campus Fire Safety Activities for 2010

We partnered with Dominos and NFPA again this year!!!

DELIVERING-logo-350.jpgThe Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS), the nation’s leading non-profit organization focused on campus fire safety, is pleased to announce that it will be partnering again this year with Dominos Pizza and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to bring our “Delivering Fire Safety on Campus” message to various major cities nationwide.

September is Campus Fire Safety Month and colleges and universities across the country are conducting events to raise students’ awareness of campus fire- and life-safety issues. Our joint program with Domino’s and NFPA in 2009 was a huge success. We reached thousands of students with our delivering fire safety messages – along with a great assortment of Dominos pizza.

During Campus Fire Safety Month, students learn that fires do happen in campus-related settings and that they need to protect themselves no matter where they live, learn or play. To help teach essential fire-safety skills and instill awareness, colleges and universities across the country are holding Campus Fire Safety Month events. This year, CCFS, NFPA, and Domino’s are bolstering these special events in concert with public safety officials at the following schools:

Arizona State University - Tempe, Arizona

Georgia State University - Atlanta, Georgia

Texas A&M – College Station, Texas

University at Albany, S.U.N.Y. - Albany, New York

University of Southern California - Los Angeles, California

University of Alabama -- Tuscaloosa, Alabama

“We are very excited to be working with Domino’s Pizza, NFPA and our on-campus colleagues at each of the participating institutions” said Paul D. Martin, president of CCFS, “Through this great collaboration we are confident that even more students are gaining an appreciation and awareness of fire and receiving life-saving messages that they will carry with them well beyond college.”

Just some of the plethora of on campus events include: mock dorm room demonstration burns; hands-on fire extinguisher training; “The Great Escape on Campus”; campus-fire-safety fairs and residential hall fire drills.

At each partner college or university, a local Domino’s will be delivering pizza and special fire safety messages throughout the day. Domino’s has been working to promote fire safety in families and communities for years. This partnership allows us to reach thousands of college students and help to increase awareness of fire safety on college campuses throughout the nation.

CCFS and NFPA produced materials on fire and life safety will also be distributed to participants. CCFS is focusing on building fire safety features and alcohol and fire safety, as CCFS notes that all too frequently the consumption of alcohol lowers the probability of quick and logical evacuation and often is a contributing factor to the loss of life in fires involving college students.

In addition, the CCFS board of directors is working with colleges and universities in their area of the country to encourage campus-based events during September that highlight the importance of Campus Fire Safety Month.

Texas A&M - College Station

Texas A&M had their Campus Fire Safety Awareness week from September 6 through September 10th. Thursday, September 9th was Fire Safety & Haz Mat Day when Fire Safety & Hazardous Materials information was available from a variety of sources including: Residence Life, Environmental Health & Safety, the Office of Safety & Security, and more. Also, the local Domino’s in College Station provided pizza throughout the day for students and other attendees.

The event went well although the weather didn’t cooperate with rain off and on each day. Despite the weather there was still quite a crowd of students whom The Texas State Fire Marshal, as well as the University President both addressed.

Have an Exit Strategy
Texas State Fire Marshall, Paul Maldonado, will be discussing the “Have an Exit Strategy Where You Live, Work, and Play” initiative which urges Texans to learn ways out of any room, whether that room happens to be a classroom, a conference
room at work, a movie theater, or other locale.

Mock Residence Hall Room Burn
The 2nd Annual Mock Residence Hall Room Burn sponsored by the Department of Residence Life, Environmental Health & Safety, and the College Station Fire Department. Don’t miss your opportunity to see how quickly a dorm room can
burn!

According to James Rainer, environmental safety manager at the university, nearly 500 students attended last year's event and participated in other programs designed to raise awareness among college students. “At the end last year's event it was requested by the Director of Residence Life that this become an annual event,” said Rainer.

Georgia State University - Atlanta

Georgia State University is holding its second annual Fire Safety Carnival on September 30th to teach students and community members that there's more to know than "stop, drop and roll."

The carnival will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hurt Park and will feature contests, games and activities that highlight fire safety and prevention tips for dorm rooms, Greek houses and off-campus living.

GSU students and community members will learn how to use fire extinguishers, practice safe cooking techniques, test fire alarms, notify the fire department using 911 and identify fire hazards such as unattended candles

"We wanted to do something special to promote fire safety throughout our university," said James Brundage, Georgia State University's fire safety officer. "We hope to make it a fun event by having interactive exhibits, free prizes, food, fun games and live burn demonstrations."

Firefighters will also demonstrate a live burn of mock dorm rooms, one with a sprinkler and one without, to show how quickly a fire can spread. It will also highlight the importance of working smoke alarms and sprinklers.

Officials from Georgia State's Office of Emergency Management, the Atlanta Fire Department, Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office, Georgia Emergency Management Agency and corporate sponsors will be on hand to address the importance fire and life safety for college students.

University at Albany S.U.N.Y. - Albany

The University at Albany hosted their Campus Fire Safety Day on September 15 from 11am to 1pm where students, RAs and other guests got a close-up look at fire safety protocols as part of their training.

Also featured were hands on demonstrations, educational materials and refreshments provided by a local Domino's Pizza! A live mock dorm burn at 1:00PM showed students how fast a fire can overcome a dorm room and what to do in the event of a fire. "The students here are thinking about their college, their parties and their classes and all the things that they've come to school for," said Office of Fire Prevention and Control Deputy Chief Guy Swartwout. "They totally fail to realize that fire kills more people in the United States than all natural disasters combined."

University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa

The University of Alabama will host their 2010 Campus Fire Safety day on September 24th from 11 am to 1 pm.

University of Maryland -- College Park

University of South Carolina - Columbia

Fire Safety Awareness day at the University of South Carolina was held on October 6th. A mock dorm room was constructed in the center of campus and placed several fire hazards such as extension cords, unapproved multi plug outlets, candles, ash trays, oversized bulbs in lamps and a covered smoke detector within the unit. Students were encouraged to walk through and indentify the many hazards and they were provided with an opportunity to win prizes. In addition fire extinguisher training was offered which was a huge hit with the students. The Columbia Fire department was on hand to display their equipment and emergency response techniques.

The finale was to ignite a trash in the room and show how fast a fire can spread in a typical dorm room. The majority of comments that we heard from the students were related to how “real” the room looked and that they were amazed in how quick the fire spread. This event demonstrated the cooperativeness and dedication between the many departments at USC that worked hard to carry out this event.
